Sidewalk upgrades

University and Gerardi Safe Routes to Schools

Project Description

RAUCH inc. served as the Project Administrator and Construction Inspector, for this SHA- funded Safe Routes to School Sidewalk Project.  The RAUCH inc. team provided project plans, oversaw the bidding process and contractor selection.  Oversight of the installation including review of requests for information and payment applications, progress reporting and completion project inspection and close-out services. The grants team administered all paperwork and coordinated requisitions and materials approvals and final close-out documentation.

Prior to the Gerardi Blvd. project, RAUCH inc. completed (2) street design and drainage improvement projects in the vicinity of Federalsburg Elementary School that included the installation of new sidewalks and ADA accessible ramps.  The Railroad Avenue project included sidewalk extensions to the intersection of Railroad Avenue and University Avenue.  There was a 440’ space in the sidewalk system from the intersection to the school parking lot.  The absence of sidewalk created an unsafe area for walkers, especially due to heavy commercial and industrial truck traffic.  There was also a drainage problem at the intersection created period flooding that obstructed walkers.

The project included the construction 440 ft. length of 4 foot wide sidewalk and curb within the existing right of way that connected the school parking lot to the recently completed sidewalk ending at the intersection of Railroad and University Avenues.  ADA ramps and accessibility were included at both ends.  The drainage problem was corrected by two inlets and approximately 220 ft. of 15” ADS N-12 that connected to installed stormdrains adjacent to the school property.

RAUCH inc. completed all site work for both projects including an existing conditions survey, verification or property lines and rights of way; preparation of all construction design documents; complete oversight of the bidding process including: advertising for bid, receipt and contract award, pre-construction meeting and notice to proceed. The firm provided construction inspection services through project completion to insure compliance.
